Making a mainsail

Finally, it was time to make the mainsail for Dinah-Moe Humm. We used a SailRite kit. The way this works is you contact sailrite and give them some measurements. For a mainsail this would include the distance from the boom to the "black line" on the top of the mast, the usable length of the boom, the size of the track on the mast - that kind of stuff. You can also specify some other aspects you might like - such as a flat cut, or a sail with not much roach.

Then they design the sail and cut all the pieces and ship them to you. The only thing you'll need is a rugged sewing machine and a place to make the sail. Basically, all you have to do is tape the pieces together (like basting tape if you've made clothes) and then sew all the big pieces together. The tack and clew patches, the reef points and batten pockets are really the hardest part because by that point the sail is getting kind of big and so they require a lot of futzing to get them into the machine.
